Visual Arts in Fisher Pavilion
The visual arts programming at Bumbershoot is made up of exhibits in both the Fisher and Seattle Center pavilions. The three exhibits in the Fisher Pavilion include Detritus We ValueThe Enigma Machine, and Fashiony (details below).

Detritus We Value
is a sampling of Brooklyn-based sculptor Jonathan Schipper’s large-scale kinetic artworks, his work has centered on the crossroads where biology, engineering, psychology, and art meet. He has concentrated on large-scale, engineered, technology-based artworks that find their inspiration at the foundations of function and recognition. His work is often focused on entropy and decay, work that becomes most alive just before it ends. Many of his ideas are derived from media but the work is physical, live, and irreproducible. For Bumbershoot, he is creating new piece that will be an artificial and continuously changing environment based on trash, salt, human will, and hot water bathing.

Enigma Machine
curated by Shelly Leavens and Jana Brevick
We find ourselves deep in the seductive age of the all-powerful and hyper-programmed machine, from 3D printers to robotic technology. What are artist's responses to this age and do they embrace or reject the chance to experiment with new technology for art-making? Reactionary and temporal, Enigma Machine artworks examine, in part, age-old questions of human-machine interaction. Visitors will see 2-D works created by machine, mechanical sculpture, electronic and light works that rely on the artist's programmed process to create, or ask for the viewer's participation.

Artwork featured will include new pieces from Seattle artists Claude Zervas and Maggie Orth, the classic film Der Lauf Der Dinge (The Way Things Go) by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, performative kinetic sculpture 56L by Danish artist Henrik Menné, interactive electronic work by Samson Young of Hong Kong, early and mid-career works by seminal light artist Thomas Wilfred, and more.

Through the creation of workroom style vignettes, Fashiony presents three galleries of tear sheets, visual materials, and video that will interpret, through documentation, emerging trends in Illustration and African and Asian style. Hung salon-style, attendees will be able to comprehensively experience the latest in fashion drawing, photography, and textile/surface design.

Visual Arts in Seattle Center Pavilion
The visual arts programming at Bumbershoot is made up of exhibits in both the Fisher and Seattle Center pavilions. The three exhibits in the Seattle Center Pavilion include Found & UnboundMagic Sync, and After the Riot (details below).

Found & Unbound is a group exhibit of artworks that explores the use of found and repurposed objects. The relationship of mass-produced objects to our natural world and landscape is explored through this collection of sculptures, collages, and videos. Featuring: Animal Charm, Craig Baldwin, Howard Barlow, Justin Beckman, Matt Browning, Scott Fife, Sayaka Ganz, Guy Laramee, Shaun Kardinal, and Jason Mecier.

Magic Sync is an interactive installation of music, light, and sculpture. By manipulating a control panel, the viewer animates both sculptural and audio elements—in effect, producing a unique re-mix of the piece.

For After the Riot, Reel Grrls, Seattle's award-winning non-profit media arts and leadership training program, will bring a group of artists who work primarily in combined video and performance mediums, and who are all exploring facets of gender identity, feminism, and body image with a spirit of creativity and inclusion, as well as a sense of humor. Each day, Reel Grrls will present a participatory workshops, conversations, and performances. In between workshops and performances, Reel Grrls’ participants (youth filmmakers and performers) will screen and show their work. Participants in Wynne Greenwood’s Video + Performance classes will open for each of the visiting artists’ programs. After the Riot is coordinated for Bumbershoot by Betsey Brock, Reel Grrls Director of External Relations, and Clyde Petersen, Reel Grrls Technical Director.

Reel Grrls is joined for workshops and performances by artists Anna Oxygen, Gender Failure, Tender Forever, and Molly Mac - as well as presenting new work by Reel Grrls participants in Wynne Greenewood's Video and Performance classes.

Through visuals, words, sounds, and original music, “Gender Failure” explores and exposes the prolific pair’s failed attempts at fitting into the gender binary—and ultimately how the gender binary doesn’t add up. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, Coyote brings her razor-sharp timing and powerful narrative, while Spoon adds an ethereal voice and poetic turns of phrase to the dynamic duo’s now seven-year-old artistic partnership.

Our popular panel series “Why This? Why That? Why Now?” returns for a third year. Each day will highlight a pair of current trends explored by cultural experts and this year’s moderator, Corn Mo, a New York City-based musician and entertainer. What is the appeal of games like Settlers of Catan? Why are board games getting popular in the age of video games? Why have zombies risen over vampires in the interest of the undead? Why do they keep coming back after it seems they've peaked? Why is froyo so popular? Why are denizen, frozen-yogurt establishments eclipsed? Why is YOLO a reason to leave a comfort zone? Why not write "You Only Live Once" in cursive? Why is fan fiction taking off? Who is the Richard Brautigan of fan fiction? Why does George RR Martin despise it? Why YA? Because of the way it sounds.

Electrifying Seattle quartet The Redwood Plan conquered hearts, ears, and dancing feet with its 2010 full-length, Racing Towards the Heartbreak. Propelled by succinct, melodic hooks, their songs leap from the speakers. The music from their most recent record, Green Light Go, further evolves, revealing a denser, dynamic, and more eclectic sound—one that more fully reflects the aesthetics of the musicians behind it. The Redwood Plan synthesizes punk rock energy and bristling electronic sounds, accommodating both guitarist Sydney Stolfus’s background in metal bands and singer and multi-instrumentalist Lesli Wood’s Riot Grrrl roots.

Why Fan Fiction? Why YA? Why Now?

Audrey & Nelson: A Puppet Sex Musical
Audrey & Nelson is a puppet sex musical. That pretty much sums it up right there—puppets singing about and having sex. Audrey and Nelson, two twenty-somethings (portrayed by puppets), meet at a bar, get drunk, and fall into bed. Excited by their sexual chemistry, they try to turn this chance encounter into a relationship… and it doesn't work out. But along the way, they experiment with a lot of sex and confide in their best friends, who have some sexual issues of their own. And much of this is expressed in the form of low-fi indie-pop songs, in a K-Records vein. Book and lyrics by Bret Fetzer, music by Peter Richards (of the band Dude York).

Bob Mould
The music Bob Mould has created defines every phase of his life, both cataloging memories and propelling him ever forward: Hüsker Dü’s formation in 1979 and the tight, melodic hardcore anthems; his emotionally epic solo works; his forays into electronic music; and, of course, the recently reissued body of work that Sugar packed into its brief existence. It seems to be Bob’s summations and reflections on these major creative periods of his life and career that open up new wellsprings while coming to terms with the old works—a natural process that has produced winning results yet again in the form of his most recent release, Silver Age.

Artwork featured will include new and recent pieces from Seattle artists Claude ZervasMaggie Orth, Mark Vonrosenstiel and Meghan Trainor, the classic film Der Lauf Der Dinge (The Way Things Go) by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, performative kinetic sculpture 56L by Danish artist Henrik Menné, interactive electronic work by Samson Young of Hong Kong and early and mid-career works by seminal light artist Thomas Wilfred.

The Maldives have grown from the personal project of lead singer and songwriter Jason Dodson to a small musical army with a rotating cast of contributors that occasionally swells to twelve members. A staple of the Northwest folk rock revival, the band seamlessly blends acoustic and electric features into their finely-crafted songs. The Maldives’ music builds on a heritage of cinematic American rock and roll that is at turns chivalrous and fist-pumping-steeped in tradition but unbound by expectations.

The Men
In early 2013, Brooklyn-based post-punk outfit The Men released New Moon, the most intensely personal and immersive installment in their catalog, an album described by critics as “Dinosaur Jr. on a serious Tom Petty kick.” Sharing songwriting duties and staying true to their “no-one-is-frontman” maxim, The Men make a patchwork narrative with their tunes, ranging from a MC5-style firebomb to a somber instrumental and a pleasant pop cover song. Nostalgia is the central thesis in their music, but the band’s clear ethos is to revisit but never retread.

alt-J
Even before the release of their debut single, favorable comparisons came quickly for the British quartet alt-J, with their music described as “Nick Drake meets gangsta rap,” and likened to In Rainbows-era Radiohead. Veering wildly from psychedelic avant-pop to skeletal folktronica, alt-J's sound highlights understated beauty one minute and epic oddities the next, tackling everything from bullfighting to the heroic life of 1930s war photographer Gerda Taro. Winning the coveted British Mercury Prize in 2012 and appearing on the soundtrack to the Oscar-winning film Silver Linings Playbook propelled alt-J’s career to new heights, helping them gain a wide international following.

Why Board Games? Why Zombies? Why Now?

Superchunk
Indie rock icons Superchunk helped define the lo-fi aesthetic of the early 1990s. With the release of 2010’s Majesty Shredding and this year’s I Hate Music, the venerable combo proves that time has done nothing to temper its biting, buzzing alt-rock—a sound as fresh and invigorating as ever.

Ivan & Alyosha
Ivan & Alyosha—the Seattle combo which borrows its name from a pair of characters from Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov—delivers its songs of struggle, perseverance and spirituality with a resilient, upbeat attitude that’s reflected in its bubbly brew of stirringly strummed folk-rock guitars, surging instrumental interaction and a bright, buoyant blend of voices that reflects the band members’ family-style camaraderie. The result is a timeless pop ideal that’s as emotionally affecting as it is pleasing to the ear.

Allen Stone
Allen Stone's soulful and socially conscious music has earned him legitimate comparisons to Marvin Gaye and Bill Withers, but the 25-year-old singer-songwriter just sees himself as "a hippie with soul." Spending his adolescence steeped in gospel music and shielded from secular songs, Allen discovered classic soul music as a teenager. His 2010 debut reached the Top 10 of the Billboard Heatseekers chart and his first appearance on Conan soon followed, with Esquire and CNN naming Stone as an artist to watch.

Deerhunter
Hailing from Atlanta, Georgia, the origins of Deerhunter can be traced back to the high school meeting of controversial frontman Bradford Cox and guitarist Lockett Pundt. Since 2001, Deerhunter has seen various lineup incarnations and, after a brief hiatus, the band reconvened to record their latest record, Monomania. Produced by Bradford Cox and Nicholas Vernhes and recorded in the dead of the night, Monomania finds the group recalling its scrappy punk aesthetic, producing a perfect nocturnal garage rock album full of layered and hazy vintage guitar sounds.

The Lone Bellow
Transplanted Southerners playing “Brooklyn country music,” The Lone Bellow released their debut album earlier this year and have already amassed support and acclaim from esteemed outlets like NPR and The New York Times. The project was initially born out of a near-tragedy and the band’s songs often tackle that theme in addition to hope, betrayal, and redemption—but there’s an undeniable exuberance that underpins the proceedings, particularly in their live shows.

The Joy Formidable
A forest just outside Casco, Maine was the setting for the recording of The Joy Formidable’s latest release, Wolf’s Law—an album teeming with wild swings of imagination, primal yearning, and the Welsh duo's signature waterfalls of guitar. With themes touching on precarious relationships, catharsis, birth, and death, and a sonic sensibility that favors high volume as much as high drama, it’s no surprise that the real-life romantic pair deliver a jaw-dropping live show.
