We find ourselves deep in the seductive age of the all-powerful and hyper-programmed machine, from 3D printers to robotic technology. What are artist's responses to this age and do they embrace or reject the chance to experiment with new technology for art-making? Reactionary and temporal, Enigma Machine artworks examine, in part, age-old questions of human-machine interaction. Visitors will see 2-D works created by machine, mechanical sculpture, electronic and light works that rely on the artist's programmed process to create, or ask for the viewer's participation.
Artwork featured will include new pieces from Seattle artists Claude Zervas and Maggie Orth, the classic film Der Lauf Der Dinge (The Way Things Go) by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, performative kinetic sculpture 56L by Danish artist Henrik Menné, interactive electronic work by Samson Young of Hong Kong, early and mid-career works by seminal light artist Thomas Wilfred, and more.
Reel Grrls is joined for workshops and performances by artists Anna Oxygen, Gender Failure, Tender Forever, and Molly Mac - as well as presenting new work by Reel Grrls participants in Wynne Greenewood's Video and Performance classes.

The hilarious Allie Brosh of the beloved blog and forthcoming book Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened will speak and show slides. “Here’s a rough analogy: David Sedaris sets out to write a graphic memoir, but decides to use the MS Paint application on his computer rather than hire an artist….[Brosh’s] naïve art plays brilliantly against dark comic themes.” --(Michael Humphrey, True/Slant). The program will open with brief readings by local writer Michael Overa and his Writers in the Schools student from TOPS K-8.

Long have Redd Kross rocked, and long have critics, devoted fans, and fellow musicians—such as Nirvana and Sonic Youth—bowed before the Kross and their self-aware brand of garage-born and psych-soaked rock and roll. Degenerate, sweet, tongue-in-cheek, and utterly fearless, Redd Kross have endured because they have always had the best possible attitude, combining smarts, smiles, and a total commitment to hair-spinning showmanship. After disbanding in the late ’90s, they reformed in 2007, playing sporadically to their fiercely faithful fans. Their latest album, Researching the Blues, was released on Merge Records in late 2012.
Ever wonder what’s behind a compound word? A word like “Bumbershoot,” say? Some compound words are straightforward in meaning—schoolhouse, airport, crosswalk—while others take on meanings different from each original word: headline, championship, clockwise. Writers in the Schools K-12 students and Teaching Artists tackle the “problem” of compound words in original poems and stories, read in tandem from stage.
